How about First Editions? Are they something special? Or “just another book” to you?
I’m not one of those people who concerned with the prestige or presentation of what I’ve come to refer to as my “mini library.” The way I see the books and ebooks that I own are for my own reading pleasure so I don’t go searching for books that are expensive first editions just to say, I have that one! However, I do like shopping in used book stores, and heres why. I love that when I pick out a book thats a bit older and has obviously been read by others I know that the book I’m holding in my hands has been a source of enjoyment for another person. I love the history that comes with buying used books. The oldest book I currently own is from about 1890 and when I look at it I’m always taken aback that I have a book that is one hundred years older than I am. I also have books with little notes written in them from one person to another which I find really special.
Basically, when it comes down to it, I don’t need to own First Editions of books, though it’s certainly cool to have them, but I do cherish old books because for me they bring a sense of comfort with them.
What do you think?
I agree with you about old books … there is something about used/old books having been handled by many people and they do have a certain feel and smell that I love.
Nicely answered. Interesting question, don’t you think? I personally am an avid reader, not a collector of books, although, I do own alot. Here’s my answer for this week’s Booking Through Thursday.
