Musing Mondays, hosted by MizB, is back and so I am glad to participate again.
This weeks question:
Do you prefer deep, intellectual, “meaty” books… or light, “fluffy” books? Why? Give us an example of your preferred type of book.
My quick, one word answer to this is, both.
Some of the books I read are very deep. These include many of the memoirs that deal with issues in life such as war, coping with illnesses, overcoming addictions. They are not fluffy, and they generally are not pretty either. There is fiction as well that falls into this category… in my opinion many of the classics are far more intellectual than they are light and fluffy.
As for fluff reading, well we all know how much I love that. Especially since I started reading romance novels last year. While some romances might be considered closer to the deep side of the spectrum, I find that they are great fluff reads for me. I spend so much time working and doing six classes worth of school work that at the end of the day there is nothing like losing myself in easy reading that is romance. To add to that, I consider the little young adult reading that I do to be closer to fluff reading than anything else. While many YA books deal with real life issues, they have a tendency to be written in a way that I don’t have to use too much brain power to figure out what is going on.
Basically, I when I think in terms of complicated or uncomplicated reading, I put it on a spectrum. I don’t read many books where I need to have a dictionary next to me to look up a word in every other sentence, but I do consider myself a reader covering that spectrum.
