Teaser Tuesday: February 8

And so it’s Teaser Tuesday again!

This week I’m definitely cheating a bit more than usual with my teaser, but I feel the nature of the book calls for it and I would be doing the book something of a disservice not including something from each side of the great debate.

“Why did Freud insist on this term when so many people advised him otherwise? When Carl Jung urged Freud to reconsider, Freud replied that he thought it was more effective to challenge people with a confrontational approach. ‘We cannot avoid the resistances, so why not rather challenge them at once? In my opinion, attack is the best defense.'”

“Perhaps the greatest contribution Lewis makes to understanding sexuality and love is his clear distinction between being in love and love in its deeper, more mature form. I always tell my Harvard students that if they learn nothing more than to understand clearly this distinction, they may save themselves a lifetime of unnecessary stress.”

From The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life by Dr. Armand Nicholi – a book that I must say is high on the interest scale.

Ah, Freud…what turbulence he has stirred up amongst his readers and followers…not to mention those who disagree with him completely! LOL

    Thanks for sharing.

Fascinating teasers! I would have loved to be a “fly on the wall” for any discussions or debates between Lewis and Freud. I’m not so sur I agree with Freud here although what he says is interesting. Lewis’ comment is intriguing and thought-provoking, this isn’t an easy distinction!

    Thank you!
