Read-A-Thon Day is Here!

Today is the day! The 24-hour read-a-thon is happening now. Unfortunately I’m joining in a few hours late, but I was sleeping and had a few other things to take care of before I could start reading, so it’s more like the twenty hour read-a-thon for me. This is the post that I’ll be updating from throughout the day so keep an eye out.

To get started, some questions to introduce ourselves…

1)Where are you reading from today?
Manchester, CT, USA
2)Three random facts about me…
i. I have two brothers who are 16 and 18.5 years younger than me
ii. I have an unhealthy obsession with The Mummy movies – I’ve seen them hundreds of times
iii. If I could live off of sushi, chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, coffee, and slurpees I would.
3)How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours?
Ideally I’d like to finish three books I’ve started and get through a couple more.
4)Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)?
As long as I finish the three books I’m partway through and one more I’ll have done pretty well for myself.
5)If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, any advice for people doing this for the first time?
Ahh, but this is my first read-a-thon, so I can’t really give any advice. I can say happy reading, though!

It’s 11:00am and I’m officially – finally – reading!

Currently I’ve got The Sweetest Thing by Jill Shalvis going. 97 pages left and counting…

It’s just about 2 pm and I have finally, gloriously finished The Sweetest Thing. I can’t even count the number of distractions and interuptions I’ve had since I started reading, but it seems I’m finally getting some peace to read.

I’ve been keeping up with the official read-a-thon site, and there are tons of awesome mini-challenges to check out as well as general bookish awesomeness.

I’m moving on now to Katie MacAlister’s Steamed. 132 pages to go…

6 pm.

So, when I said it appeared I would finally have some peace, well… it seems I lied. I finished Steamed just a few minutes ago. 4 hours for just over 100 pages…. eeeep.

I’ve got a couple of things to deal with, so unfortunately I won’t be able to read much in the coming hour, but as its getting closer to evening I’m hoping to do more reading. Maybe the universe will finally be with me on that?

7:45 pm.

It’s just past the midway point and I’ve just posted my answers to the midpoint survery.

I’m changing things up with my reading plans. I got an email from the library earlier than an e-copy of The Perfect Bride for Mr. Darcy by Mary Lydon Simonsen is available to me… finally. I’ll be starting with that just as soon as I get this posted and after I eat some dinner I’m going to barricade myself in my bedroom and turn my phone off so I can read without interruption.

How’re you guys doing?

1:30 am.

I am sucking wind, book style. In all the hours since I’ve updated I’ve only read 180 pages. I’m behind where I want to be, but then that’s life. I’m either disrupted by something else or I let myself get caught up in reading other blogs… but hey. Its all good.

Still reading The Perfect Bride for Mr. Darcy. 100 pages to go…

4:15 am.

I’ve finished The Perfect Bride for Mr. Darcy with just under four hours left of the read-a-thon.

I’m going to take a little break and then figure out what I want to start reading next. Whoo!

5 am.

Three hours to go! I’m reading I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced by Nujood Ali.

6 am.

Two hours to go. Less than 100 pages left of I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced.

I’m starting to get a bit tired. Definitely looking forward to some real sleep soon.

8 am!

The ‘thon has officially ended!

I think I did alright for my first read-a-thon. I finished two books I had started before the ‘thon… The Sweetest Thing by Jill Shalvis and Steamed by Katie MacAlister.

I read two books in entirety… The Perfect Bride for Mr. Darcy by Mary Lydon Simonsen and I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced by Nujood Ali

I also started Cowboy Fever by Joanne Kennedy which was on the original list and got a few chapters in to that.

The end is here and seeing as I’ve had about 4 hours of sleep in the last 44 hours, or some equally ridiculous number, it’s time for me to get some sleep.

Most definitely! Happy reading to you as well!

Impressive – both the staying awake and the quantity of reading done! I could probably read one (or maybe two) good books in 24 hours but they’d have to be really good to keep me awake on their own (not being a coffee drinker).

It’s not too bad, though my ability to stay awake for long periods of time with minimal sleep – and being able to functioning at those times – can mostly be attributed to all the practice I’ve gotten pulling all-nighters as a college kid. =]
