In this second installment of things Hannah has liked in the last few years I’m going to focus on book series. More specifically book series I’ve started and haven’t finished yet. Some of these series are still being written, but some of these are going to be quite shameful because there is at least one series I started when I was here over 6 six years ago and never finished – such classic Hannah.
The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs: I marathoned the first seven or eight books of this series back in 2014 and absolutely loved them. I really enjoy the world and the characters that Briggs created here, and there are still bits of these books I think about even now, but I am not caught up at all.
House of Comarre by Kristin Painter: Painter came up with a very interesting take on the vampire world in this series by creating this idea of the Comarre. A group of specially trained exquisite humans that are sold to aristocratic vampires for the purpose of giving their blood. They are the best of the best. The series follows one Comarre in particular along with a cursed vampire, a shifter who’s not really into the politics of it all, and a ghost who’s tied to them both as they navigate this world of intrigue so to speak. The connections and relationships in this book are really what make it for me, yet I never finished the last two books.
The Original Sinners series by Tiffany Reisz: These books are certainly not for everyone, but I love them because of how not politically correct and gritty they are. These books are very much in your face, the characters are so flawed and have their own secrets. I really enjoyed the few of these that I read and I really should read on.
These next two series are probably my most shameful because I read them a very long time ago, but then never actually read the final book in either series when they came out even though I’m pretty sure I pre-ordered both.
Bloodlines by Richelle Mead: This series is an offshoot of Mead’s Vampire Academy series which I really enjoyed. In this we follow the Alchemist Sydney as she gets pulled into the politics of the vampire court. Book 5 ended on a major cliffhanger, but despite the last book coming out in 2015 (I cannot believe it’s been that long), I still don’t know how it ends.
Lux by Jennifer L. Armentrout: I lapped up the first four books in this series once I finally decided to give the series a chance. It had been quite hyped up from what I remember back in the day, and I was hesitant to read these because I was afraid they would not be enjoyable, but I actually found the premise really quite interesting. Lux is the product of the ‘aliens on earth’ wave of YA, and for a book with such non-human characters I was quite surprised at how well the main characters were fleshed out. But again…. book 5 came out in 2014. I have not read it. The hell.
When I was compiling my list for this post, I was surprised to see how many series there were that I had read only the first book, but hadn’t yet read on in the series. Particularly in some of them in which I absolutely adored those first books. Without further adieu…
The Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks: I love, love, love this world. The idea of magic manifesting as being able to control certain colors of light and the costs associated with using the magic, plus the intrigue, the characters, even the family drama, just everything in this first book The Black Prism was so good. I have to read on.
The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne: This first book was very intriguing and I really enjoyed his take on druidism and this focus on the importance of nature. I am very curious to see where he takes this series.
Call of Crows by Shelly Laurenston: This book is based completely in myth with a twist. After all who doesn’t love some romance and mythology all wrapped up into one? I loved it. That is all.
Anno Dracula series by Kim Newman: I read this first book with a couple of friends of mine and all of us gushed about it. Genevieve and Charles sold this for us. The series seems to continue across time, so I am looking forward to reading on in this series and just going along with the ride.
