This week, Weekly Geeks is all about honoring bookshelves and the carpenters who make them.
So join me this week in posting a picture of your bookshelf (or a selection of your bookshelves if you have more than one) and, if you’re really into it, some stories about your bookshelf. Where did you get it? Do you have a love/hate relationship with how much or little it holds? And how did you choose which books to keep on this particular one? How do you organize your books on the shelf?
I love bookshelves! Whenever I go to someones house for the first time one of the first things I look for are books and bookshelves. I will gladly at any time, talk books/bookshelves. I have done a post where I showed pictures of my shelves before, but considering I’ve gotten a new shelf since, I’ve decided to participate and share my bookshelves with you again.
To the left is my most recently acquired shelf. My mom actually bought this shelf for our office, but I pretty much grabbed it and took it for my own use – that sounds bad, but don’t worry, she was cool with it. Originally I used the top shelves for all of those romance novels I bought last summer and the bottom shelves were all textbooks, but as I bought more books I had stacks everywhere. Now the shelf is all romance and I’ve actually started double shelving.
To the right is my other ‘big’ shelf. This is actually the first bookshelf I ever got. My mom bought it for me when I was eight or so. It wasn’t always full of books like it is now, but its still the original shelf for me. As you can see I have small stacks of books all over this shelf as well. The stack toward the bottom is actually there because I am in the process of reorganizing my shelves since I am so out of room. I just haven’t figured out how to make everything work as of yet. This shelf is all fiction, classics, mystery, that sort of stuff.
Because I am so out of shelf space I have started putting books on the top of my shelves. The picture to the left is all books on top of the romance shelf. The box is full of books that a friend gave me to go through and other random books I’ve borrowed or just haven’t found a home for. The other books are all young adult, a couple of fantasy series, and my Vampire Academy and House of Night books. On the right is the top of the ‘big’ shelf. The majority of my science fiction and fantasy books can be found there. As I’ve just recently starting reading from that genre, there aren’t too many so they still fit there… for the most part.
This is the last shelf that holds a crazy amount of books. This is one of my IKEA acquisitions – I don’t know about you, but I love IKEA shelving. I have a lot of random crap on the shelf, though you can see it’s mostly books. On the top is all of my P&P variations, I’ve got a few. The far left of the second shelf is my favorites section. The rest of the second and all of the third shelf hold the majority of my non-fiction books. The bottom is fiction that doesn’t fit on the ‘big’ shelf or the smaller shelf which I don’t have pictured here.
I have books other places of course. The smaller shelf I mentioned, plus I’ve got some in the office. I also have another bookshelf, but I’ve never actually used it as a bookshelf, and if I tried to, I would just end up trading piles of books for piles of other crap that I’ve had on the shelf for years. In light of that, I use the top for books, but not the actual shelves. Someday… I will have enough shelving space for all of my books.
How do you feel about your bookshelves? Do you have a favorite or a method to your book madness? Do you have enough room, or are you scrounging for book space?
I have 9x6foot book shelves crammed with books plus 2 half that size equally crammed. I also have several piles of books stacked on the floor. I have recently developed a pre-pile stack of books awaiting cataloging so I can add them to a pile…. [grin]
Sounds like you’ve got something of a library going there. =]
I have a better library than most libraries….. [grin] In fact when I first visited our (small) local library I actually had more books than them!
I can’t imagine just how many books you have to own to have more books than an actual library. I definitely have nowhere near the amount of books either of the public libraries in my town has, but because funding is strained right now, it takes a while to get copies of recent releases.
I’m not exactly sure how many books I have. I always think that it will just take too long to count them. I *think* I have somewhere in the region of 5-6 thousand…. probably……
Well then, you’re definitely not lacking in reading material.
I like to double stack my books to maximize shelf space. I totally agree about Ikea shelves. I have a four by four cube shelf that I got last year and I love love love it.
I’ve taken to double stacking recently simply because, I have no more space for shelves and not enough shelf space for all of my books. One of my shelves that isn’t shown is the cube shelf, but mine is the two by four!
